Activity

The research of Pietro Alessandro Brivio has focused on several areas in the Optical Remote Sensing, from Visible to the Thermal Infrared, both from aerial and space platforms for studying and monitoring land and environment.

His activities covered all the aspects of remote sensing techniques from data acquisition and radiometric calibration to data analysis and interpretation.

Application fields range from local scale mapping (land cover, forest fires and burned areas, …) to  regional and continental scale monitoring trough the development of synthetic indicators of the state of the environment and natural resources monitoring, with main interest in Africa.

From December 2004 to December 2015 Pietro Alessandro Brivio has been head of CNR-IREA research unit in Milan.

From January 2010 to May 2017: Director of Research.

Since June 2017 retired and working as Senior Research Associate

Pietro Alessandro Brivio received the Laurea Degree (summa cum laude) in Physics (1975) from the State University of Milan, Milan, Italy. After completing his civil service, from 1977 to 1982 he was Research Fellow of the National Research Council (CNR) and than since 1982 he is Research Scientist (from 2001 Senior Researcher) at Remote Sensing Unit of the Institute of Geophysics of the Lithosphere and presently of CNR-IREA  in Milan.

Since January 2010, he is Director of Research.

From December 2004 until December 2015 Pietro Alessandro Brivio has been head of CNR-IREA reserach unit in Milan.

He has been working for more than 30 years in the field of Optical Remote Sensing with satellite, airborne and in situ data within the spectral range from visible to thermal IR. His expertise covers both the acquisition of radiometric measurements and their analysis through radiation transfer models and automatic interpretation of digital imagery.

His research interests are the development of remote sensing techniques for

- land cover mapping using novel techniques as fuzzy logic and accuracy evaluation of satellite derived thematic maps with the introduction of fuzzy error matrix and optimal Pareto boundary

- integration of multi-source time-series data for environmental indicators definition and assessment using approximate reasoning techniques.

He participated at different level of responsibility to projects, either within national (Ministry of the Environment, ASI-Italian Space Agency and private companies) and international research programmes (EC, ESA, NASA).  Some of the recent International Projects:
