Activity

Lorenzo Crocco is a member of the IREA electromagnetic diagnostics team since its establishment in 2001.

 

In particular, his research interests are mainly concerned with:

 

- microwave tomographic imaging approaches for ground penetrating radar prospections;

- airborne ground penetrating radar;

- non invasive diagnostics with holographic radars;

- microwave imaging for safety (through the wall imaging, concealed objects detection, demining, bioradar);

- imaging approaches for biomedical applications of microwaves (e.g., breast cancer imaging, brain stroke, bone status monitoring); 

- therapeutic applications of electromagnetic fields (e.g. microwave hyperthermia);

- novel paradigms and methods for biomedical and industrial applications triggered by interactions between electromagnetic fields and nanoparticles;

- solution methods for forward and inverse electromagnetic scattering problems;

- theoretical aspects of non linear inverse problems.

Lorenzo Crocco was born in Naples, Italy, in 1971. He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in applied electromagnetics from the University of Naples ”Federico II”, in 1995 and 2000, respectively.

Since 2001, he has been a Research Scientist with the Institute for the Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment, National Research Council of Italy (IREA-CNR), Naples. In 2009–2011, he was an Adjunct Professor at the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria (Italy), where he currently is a member of the Board of the Ph.D. advisors. 

 

His scientific interests include noninvasive diagnostics, imaging methods, inverse problems, electromagnetic scattering problems,  electromagnetic modeling, antennas and novel electromagnetic devices, ground-penetrating radar, through the wall radar, microwave biomedical imaging and therapeutic uses of electromagnetic fields.

 

Dr. Crocco has served as Guest Editor for international scientific journals (IEEE JSTARS, Inverse Problems, Near Surface Geophysics) and is currently in the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation (IJAP). He has co-chaired the IWAGPR2007 workshop (International Workshop on Advanced Ground entreating Radar) and the XIII International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR2010). 

 

He is a Fellow of The Electromagnetics Academy (TEA) and a Senior Member of the IEEE.  He has been keynote speaker at the IWAGPR2009 workshop (Granada, ES) and invited speaker at the MMSN workshop on Inverse problems for Waves: Methods and Applications held in 2010 in Paris (FR).

 

Dr. Crocco is a Member of the Management Committee and WorkGroup Leader for COST Action TD1301, MiMed "Development of a European-based Collaborative Network to Accelerate Technological, Clinical and Commercialisation Progress in the Area of Medical Microwave Imaging".

 

He was the recipient of the “Barzilai” Award for Young Scientists from the Italian Electromagnetic Society (2004) and Young Scientist Awardee at the XXVIII URSI General Assembly (2005). In 2009, he was awarded as one of the top 100 under 40 scientists of CNR.
