Automatic Classification of Remotely Sensed Images

class1The ability to recognize (to name) and then to classify objects into categories that conform to theoretical models (pattern) is a key feature of human intelligence. The automatic classification of images, i.e. the study of methods for the automatic recognition of objects through the identification of significant regularities in a complex system and in the presence of noise, is also known as "pattern recognition". This involves the extraction of thematic information by determining the relationship between the spectral responses of the surfaces observed by satellite and the various categories or classes of interest to the user.
