Ricercatori del gruppo di Telerilevamento a microonde dell’Istituto per il Rilevamento Elettromagnetico dell’Ambiente (IREA) hanno ottenuto un sensibile miglioramento nella mappatura delle deformazioni della superficie terrestre grazie ai dati acquisiti dal nuovo satellite europeo Sentinel-1A, in orbita da un anno. Il risultato, che apre nuove prospettive al monitoraggio di terremoti e vulcani, è stato recentemente riportato sul sito dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea.

“Il nostro studio - spiega il direttore dell'IREA Riccardo Lanari - dimostra chiaramente che possiamo drasticamente aumentare la copertura spaziale delle mappe di deformazione, in termini di densità dei pixel studiati, in confronto ai risultati ottenuti con le precedenti generazioni di sistemi SAR come ERS ed Envisat."

Ciò risulta particolarmente evidente se si confrontano le mappe della velocità media di deformazione generate con i dati acquisiti dai satelliti Sentinel-1A ed Envisat sulla zona del golfo di Napoli, dove si trovano tre complessi vulcanici attivi – il Vesuvio, i Campi Flegrei e l'isola di Ischia (Figura 1). Le mappe ottenute con i dati Sentinel-1A mostrano chiaramente l’abbassamento della parte sommitale del Vesuvio, che era solo parzialmente visibile con i precedenti prodotti ricavati da ERS e Envisat. Evidente inoltre è il miglioramento ottenuto nella densità spaziale dei punti di misura sui Campi Flegrei, caratterizzati da un sollevamento continuo.

Il risultato è stato raggiunto grazie all’utilizzo della tecnica messa a punto dai ricercatori dell’IREA nota come SBAS (Small BAseline Subset), che consente di generare mappe di velocità media di deformazione e di seguire l’evoluzione temporale degli spostamenti di singoli punti.

Già largamente utilizzata a livello internazionale, questa tecnica sta ottenendo un interesse sempre più crescente. Ciò è dimostrato, per esempio, dal grande utilizzo della versione di SBAS presente nel portale Grid Processing On Demand (GPOD) del Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP) dell’ESA, che consente agli utenti di eseguire, in modo automatico e attraverso un’interfaccia user-friendly, analisi avanzate delle deformazioni della superficie terrestre su dati ERS ed ENVISAT, e nell’immediato futuro anche Sentinel-1.

"La possibilità di accedere in modo aperto e gratuito ai dati SAR del satellite Sentinel-1A, caratterizzati da una vastissima copertura della superficie terrestre, apre nuove prospettive per gli scenari di protezione civile", fa notare Michele Manunta, ricercatore IREA. "Per esempio, potremmo già produrre, in un contesto operativo, misure di deformazione superficiale dell'intero territorio italiano".

La capacità di rilevare le deformazioni superficiali sarà ulteriormente migliorata dalla disponibilità del nuovo satellite Sentinel-1B, il cui lancio è previsto nel 2016, che ridurrà il tempo tra due passaggi del satellite nella stessa orbita da 12 a 6 giorni.

Terremoto nepal 12 05 2015

Una nuova scossa di magnitudo 7.3 ha colpito il Nepal il 12 maggio 2015 ed è quella che, fra i vari after-shock, ha rilasciato la maggiore energia dopo l’evento principale del 25 aprile scorso di magnitudo 7.8.

I ricercatori dell’Istituto per il Rilevamento Elettromagnetico dell’Ambiente del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche di Napoli, beneficiando delle acquisizioni radar del satellite Sentinel-1A del Programma Europeo Copernicus, hanno generato una mappa dello spostamento del suolo indotto dal sisma tramite la tecnica dell’interferometria radar differenziale.

In particolare, l’area interessata dalla deformazione si estende per circa 40 x 60 km2 a est di Katmandu e ha subito uno spostamento in avvicinamento al sensore (corrispondente alla zona in blu in figura) con un picco massimo di circa 70 cm. 

Il campo di deformazione misurato a seguito di questa nuova scossa è stato indotto, molto verosimilmente, dalle stesse strutture sismogenetiche relative all'evento del 25 aprile ed è compatibile con la migrazione verso est  degli after-shock. 

L’attività svolta è stata realizzata nell’ambito dell’accordo tra IREA-CNR e Dipartimento della Protezione Civile(DPC), del progetto Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP) dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA) e del progetto "Infrastruttura di Alta tecnologia per il Monitoraggio Integrato Climatico-Ambientale" (I-AMICA) finanziato dal MIUR nell'ambito del Programma Operativo Nazionale (PON). I risultati presentati contengono dati Copernicus 2015.

Il progetto TEP Quick Win ha come scopo lo sviluppo di una piattaforma di ricerca collaborativa e basata su architetture distribuite (Cloud Computing) per la condivisione di dati, algoritmi e risorse di processing nel campo dell'Osservazione della Terra, e in particolare nell'ambito del GEO-Hazard. Più nello specifico, il TEP Quick Win si configura come il prosecutore del progetto SSEP (SuperSite Exploitation Platform) di ESA e come precursore del futuro TEP GEO-Hazard, sempre di ESA.

L'attività IREA all'interno del progetto consiste nella fornitura di contenuti Interferometrici a valore aggiunto da condividere sulla piattaforma sviluppata dal TEP-QW. Inoltre, IREA supporterà la definizione di un'interfaccia web per gestire e operare un servizio di elaborazione Interferometrica tramite l'algoritmo SBAS (sviluppato da IREA) in ambiente Cloud, nonché parteciperà alle attività di collaudo, test e validazione dei risultati del progetto.

fr 17042015S1A 29042015S1A full logoLe acquisizioni radar del satellite di nuova generazione Sentinel-1A del Programma Europeo Copernicus hanno consentito di analizzare i fenomeni sismici in atto, nonché gli effetti permanenti dei movimenti del suolo causati dal violento terremoto di magnitudo 7.8 che ha colpito il Nepal il 25 aprile 2015.

Lo studio è stato condotto da un team di ricercatori dell’Istituto per il Rilevamento Elettromagnetico dell’Ambiente del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche di Napoli mediante interferometria radar differenziale, la tecnica che permette di misurare dallo spazio spostamenti del terreno anche dell’ordine di pochi centimetri su aree molto estese.

La figura mostra l’interferogramma ottenuto, ossia la mappa della deformazione indotta in superficie dall’evento sismico, in un intervallo temporale che va dal 17 al 29 aprile 2015. Ognuna delle fasce di colore (frange) indica uno spostamento del suolo di circa 3 centimetri, con una deformazione massima di circa 1 metro. Tale spostamento è avvenuto a seguito del terremoto e delle successive scosse, ed è la risposta della superficie alla dislocazione sul piano di faglia in profondità.

L’attività svolta è stata realizzata nell’ambito dell’accordo tra IREA-CNR e Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (DCP), del progetto TEP-Quick Win dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA) e del progetto "Infrastruttura di Alta tecnologia per il Monitoraggio Integrato Climatico-Ambientale" (I-AMICA) finanziato dal MIUR nell'ambito del Programma Operativo Nazionale (PON). I risultati presentati contengono dati Copernicus 2015.

È stata sottoscritta il 23 aprile 2015 dal Comune di Avellino e dall’Irea-Cnr di Napoli la “Convenzione operativa per l'attività di collaborazione tecnico-scientifica nel campo della ricerca e tutela ambientale”.

«L’Intesa – ha dichiarato l’assessore all’ambiente Giuseppe Ruberto nel corso della conferenza stampa di presentazione del progetto che si è tenuta a Palazzo di Città – nasce con lo scopo di tutelare il territorio cittadino, individuando eventualmente fenomeni di dissesto idrogeologico o altri fattori di rischio legati a movimenti della superficie terrestre. Abbiamo sottoscritto con il CNR di Napoli un accordo fondamentale per il Comune di Avellino che si porrà all’avanguardia per il monitoraggio ed il controllo del proprio territorio. Grazie all’innovativa tecnologia resa disponibile dall’Irea, il Comune di Avellino potrà dotarsi di una mappatura delle aree critiche del proprio territorio e potrà così predisporre una conseguente pianificazione degli interventi.»

A illustrare tecnicamente l’attività è stato il direttore dell’Irea, Riccardo Lanari: «Periodicamente, al passaggio dei satelliti, sofisticati radar “fotografano” il territorio dallo spazio. Il ‘Radar ad apertura sintetica’ (SAR) invece di utilizzare la luce, come una comune macchina fotografica, si avvale di una radiazione elettromagnetica a microonde. Ciò consente di acquisire immagini sia di giorno sia di notte, anche quando il cielo è coperto da nuvole, visto che le microonde riescono ad attraversale. Le immagini ottenute vengono successivamente combinate e confrontate tra loro mediante una tecnica altamente innovativa, denominata SBAS, (acronimo di Small BAeline Subset) sviluppata interamente presso l’Irea-Cnr di Napoli. Mediante tale tecnica è possibile combinare le varie immagini radar acquisite nel corso del tempo riuscendo così a seguire l’evoluzione temporale dei movimenti e misurare nel dettaglio deformazioni del suolo anche molto piccole, per esempio dell’ordine del centimetro. Un risultato a dir poco sorprendente se si pensa che viene ottenuto utilizzando satelliti che si trovano a circa 800 km di altezza.»

«Queste misure – ha proseguito Lanari – riescono a coprire aree vaste e non sono limitate a pochi punti, come accade tipicamente con le tecniche di monitoraggio tradizionali. Pertanto è possibile tenere sotto controllo e analizzare fenomeni anche in zone dove non sono presenti sensori delle reti di sorveglianza perché non sono attesi effetti deformativi. Le moderne tecnologie informatiche permettono inoltre un accesso semplice ed intuitivo ai risultati di queste misure. L’Irea-Cnr di Napoli ha sviluppato una piattaforma web (http://webgis.irea.cnr.it), basata essenzialmente su una interfaccia Google Maps, attraverso la quale chiunque abbia una connessione internet può consultare i risultati della tecnica SBAS.» «Il sistema di rilevamento satellitare – ha poi aggiunto il direttore dell’Irea – è stato utilizzato, ad esempio, in occasione del sisma dell'Emilia Romagna per verificare le modificazioni negli assetti del sottosuolo. Ma ha trovato anche applicazione in un progetto di monitoraggio sul territorio di Roma, molto simile a quello che verrà realizzato sulla città di Avellino. »
